Graduation composites with AI portraits
Challenge
Orlapp was born with the goal of digitising a process that still relied on in-person photo shoots, emails and a great deal of manual work: the class composite of each graduating year. IVW Global Digital needed a platform where every student could get their academic portrait from a selfie, wearing their institution's attire and without depending on a photographer. The challenge was twofold: making the artificial intelligence always respect each person's identity and the real gown, sash and crest of each institution, and bringing students, schools and the team that produces and delivers the composites together in one system.
Implementation
At digizone we built an installable PWA for students and web panels for schools and administrators, using React, TypeScript and Supabase. The selfie is checked on the phone itself before it is sent, and a Google Cloud service generates the portrait with Gemini on Vertex AI, dressing each student in their institution's garments and crest. Every portrait goes through an automatic quality check that compares the face with the selfie and verifies crest, colours and garments; if it fails, it is generated again or sent to the team for review. We also integrated Stripe payments, transactional emails and the consent flow.
Result
The result is a platform that covers the whole composite lifecycle: students sign up, book, upload their selfie and choose between two versions of their portrait; schools set up their identity, manage courses and faculty and approve the composite before printing; and the Orlapp team oversees orders, reviews and deliveries from a single panel. A process that used to be in-person and manual becomes a digital flow accessible from the phone.
