Discovering the city in real time
Challenge
WannaNow was born from a simple question with a hard problem behind it: knowing what is happening nearby, right now. A city's listings live scattered across council websites, venues and shops, in different formats and almost always without coordinates. The challenge was to gather all that scattered information into a single map and keep it alive without manual work every day. There was also a twofold brief: any resident should be able to post a plan from the street in a matter of seconds, and businesses should manage their own programme. Because the content is open, the system needed moderation, reporting and control over personal data from day one.
Implementation
At digizone we built the complete product: the public-facing app, the management panel and the data layer that joins them. We built an importer that crawls public listings daily, normalises every event, classifies it and geolocates it with no human intervention. On Supabase we set up the data model with row-level security and scheduled tasks inside the database itself. The map runs on Google Maps, with custom markers per category and an opening sequence that centres the view before drawing anything. A single codebase powers the installable web app and the native iOS and Android apps, with no duplicated product.
Result
The result is a live system with two applications on a shared backend: a map for the public and a management panel for the editorial team. The city's listings are imported automatically every day and expired content leaves the map every minute, with nobody supervising it. The panel brings together live moderation, per-event metrics, user management and data export. WannaNow installs from the browser like any other app and also ships on iOS and Android.
